Campus Cité Scientifique and Pont-de-Bois: the daily battle of the lunch break

On the Lille 1 and Lille 3 campuses, dining requires a keen sense of strategy. Between submerged university restaurants and students eating on the ground, the lunch break has become an ordeal.

It is noon, this Tuesday, on the Pont-de-Bois university campus. A stream of students leave the university, most of whom have already finished the day. We are proceeding on the forum; on the left, a crowd begins to form in front of the building that groups the main dining rooms. The space is tight, making the demarcation of the three tails almost impossible. The wait already seems long and yet it is only the beginning.

In building A, at the back, at the level of the Théâtre des Passerelles, the pasta bar is detected. The queue extends into the adjacent corridor.

“The line often goes to the university library (BU), we only have an hour break, there are not enough microwaves for everyone… Even the staff seem overwhelmed. “

Building B: passing the small sandwich shop Tout Frais Léger, next to the brasserie, same photo. Everywhere we go, the wait seems to be at least twenty minutes. It’s not even half past.

All the students interviewed confirm this impression: between noon and 1 pm it is hell, especially on Wednesdays and Thursdays. ” All the grocery stores are full of people, even the snack bars around the campus. We carry more and more of our own food or buy sandwiches outside of rush hour, for lack of something better », Explains Elyas, who has been in Lille 3 since 2019.

Léa is present on campus only 2 days a week, the teacher obliges, but, for her, the worsening of the situation is undeniable: ” I used to go to the university canteen (RU), but this year it’s not really possible. The queue often goes to the university library (BU), we only have an hour break, there are not enough microwaves for everyone… Even the staff seem overwhelmed.

Paul, on the other hand, is a little more optimistic: I find that the offer is however varied, the quantity of food is really profitable compared to the price. But it is true that, very often, for the UK there is a minimum wait of 45 minutes. The trick is to go there around 11:45 or after 13:00.
