Best movies and TV shows to watch after playing God of War Ragnarök – L’Observateur de Troyes

After developer Santa Monica Studio’s acclaimed return to the franchise with God of War, fans have been counting down the days until the release of the equally acclaimed Ragnarök. Now that the game is out, countless people are sure to continue this thrilling adventure, filled with cathartic action and the thoughtful character development of its redeemed protagonist.

However, for fans who come away hungry, there are some worthwhile TV series and movies to stream on Prime Video and Hulu after playing, to satisfy their thirst for Nordic-themed thrills. Robert Eggers’ recent Viking epic is one such pick, and there’s also an ongoing animated series that’s worth watching for its take on Norse folklore.

The Man from the North (2022)

Alexander Skarsgård strikes a fearsome Viking pose.

The last great Norse epic to hit theaters, Robert Eggers’ The Northman (The Witch, The Lighthouse) is pure Viking action film. Starring Alexander Skarsgård in the lead role, the story follows Viking prince Amleth who embarks on a bloody quest for revenge after his uncle murders and usurps his father.

Man in the North is a story of revenge through and through, and there’s something admirable about a film that is fully aware of what it is and plays to its strengths. Even more alluring, the film and its interpretation of the world incorporate elements of ambiguous mysticism. As expected, Skarsgård delivers an incredibly primal performance, while Anya Taylor-Joy leaves a memorable impression, as always in this second collaboration with Eggers.

The Northman is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Canal+

Vikings (2013-2020)

For a Viking action series, Vikings is one of the best Norse-themed series to stream. A historical drama, this series is loosely based on the true history of Scandinavia, particularly through its main character, Ragnar Lothbrok. Ragnar is first a simple farmer who gradually rises to fame as a warrior. The story takes the characters to England and beyond.

For fans of history, medieval Norse tales, and meaningful dramatic storylines, Vikings is a gripping epic spanning six narratively satisfying seasons. The series was particularly praised for placing as much emphasis on character writing as heart-pounding action, something similarly themed films and series don’t always do.

All six seasons of Vikings are now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix

Vinland Saga (2020-)

As for the anime, season 1 of Wit Studio’s masterful adaptation of Vinland Saga by writer and artist Makoto Yukimura is quite thrilling with its storytelling and charming cast of characters. This historical fiction anime follows young Thorfinn Karlsefni as he grows from a bright-eyed boy to a vengeful warrior after his father is murdered at the hands of the Viking mercenary Askeladd.

To take revenge, he joins Askeladd’s band of mercenaries to gain the strength to kill him in a duel. In addition to the captivating writing, the soundtrack is beautiful, the atmosphere is haunting, and the story plays well with themes of redemption, forgetting the past, and living in the future.

Vinland Saga Season 1 is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Cruchyroll, with Season 2 set to premiere on January 10, 2023.

The Last Kingdom (2015-2022)

Vikings isn’t the only Norse TV series to receive critical acclaim, as The Last Kingdom has received similarly favorable reception. The series concluded with its fifth season this year and the praise has always focused on its overall impressive production value.

It begins by following Uhtred, a man raised by the band of Danish Vikings who captured him and killed his father, which leads to the character developing an interesting internal conflict as he is finally accepted as part of the family. Like Vikings, The Last Kingdom was also well received for its emphasis on well-written characters and bloody action.

All five seasons of The Last Kingdom are now available to stream on Netflix, and a cinematic sequel titled Seven Kings Must Die will hit the streamer in 2023 to wrap up the story.
