Japan’s exploit, Germany’s gesture of protest, Spain’s charter… This Wednesday’s highlights

Find the highlights of this fourth day of the 2022 World Cup. Germany, Spain and Belgium participated in the competition.

Exploit of the day: Japan has overthrown Germany

A game that will go down in history. As in 2018 when it was the turn of South Korea, Germany lost for its entry to the World Cup. This time the executioner is Japan, author of a good comeback (1-2).

Mannschaft had the game in hand after Gündogan opened the scoring from the penalty spot, but never managed a counterattack. Blame an excellent Shuichi Gonda, the Japanese goalkeeper, author of eight blocks. Against the trend of the game, the Japanese then managed to equalize and then take the lead with Doan (75And) and Asano (83And). The Germans will have to react in the next game. It won’t be easy against an impressive Spain, who beat Costa Rica (7-0) on Wednesday.

The gesture of the day: Germany motus and sealed mouth

The image went around the world in minutes. The German players took advantage of the photo taken before the defeat against Japan (1-2) to cover their mouths. A strong signal launched against the ban on the inclusive “One Love” bracelet, a symbol of the fight against discrimination. Fifa has in fact recommended to the selections not to wear it under penalty of sporting sanctions.

In the grandstand, Interior Minister in charge of sport Nancy Faeser wore the famous armband. She was alongside Gianni Infantino, president of Fifa. For her part, the German federation sent a press release on social media. She said, among other things: This is not a political message: human rights are not negotiable. It should go without saying. Unfortunately, that’s not the case yet. »

Tag of the day: Spain got rid of Costa Rica

La Roja was on display. For their first match in the competition, Luis Enrique’s men spent seven games in Costa Rica, which simply did not see the light (7-0). Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, Gavi, Ferran Torres (doubles), Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata managed to deceive Keylor Navas. Thanks to this impressive performance, Spain took the lead in Group E ahead of Japan.

The number of the day: 0, like the goals scored during Morocco-Croatia

Unhappy finalists in 2018, Croatia wanted to start this 2022 World Cup well. But the Vatreni could not do better than a disappointing draw against Morocco (0-0). A game to forget for football lovers. Despite the drive and pace, neither side managed to create a real chance. There were only seven hits, two of which scored. Insufficient to hope for anything better than a share of points.

Historical moment of the day: Thibaut Courtois, first

Thibaut Courtois became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty in Belgium’s World Cup history. His save from Alphonso Davies’ shot allowed his team to stay alive and then win by a slim margin against Canada (1-0).

At 30, the Real Madrid goalkeeper confirms that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best. As a reminder, he was awarded the Yachine trophy for best goalkeeper during the Ballon d’Or ceremony in mid-October.
