How many scientists try to unravel the countless secrets ours universe and its workings still mysterious, some believe it is possible that there is our universe reality a simulationand that we all live in a computer program. A theory which will be taken up by the Wachowskis with the saga Matrix, movies have largely contributed to the spread of the concept. And a few years ago, it was Elon Musk who declared that we actually lived in a huge video game. But it seems that now it is possible to verify whether this is really the case, as evidenced by this scientific and its future Experience.
a growing theory
Among the existential questions of the human being, the question of the origin of the universe probably remains one of the most fascinating themes. Where some will turn to religion for answers, others will favor a more scientific approach, thus giving rise to very different theories, among which we find in particular the hypothesis that we are at the center of a simulated realitythat is to say that the perceived reality is the result of a computer simulation.
This will allow for the emergence of the physics of information, a branch of physics that mixes information theory and theoretical physics, and which increasingly considers information as a physical quantity. And recently, theoretical physicist Melvin M. Vopson he said the information could also be a true state of matter.
And precisely Dr. Vopson, professor of applied physics at the University of Portsmouth and co-founder of the Information Physics Institute, recently published an article on The conversationtitled “How to check if we are living in a computer simulation” (lit.: How to check if we are living in a computer simulation), in which he explains that now it would be possible to know if we really live in a simulated reality. Then he explains:
Some data suggest that our physical reality may be a simulated virtual reality rather than an objective world that exists independently of the observer.
Any virtual reality world will be based on information processing. This means that everything is eventually digitized or rasterized down to a minimum size that can’t be subdivided any further: bits.
It seems to mimic our reality according to the theory of quantum mechanics, which governs the world of atoms and particles. […]
Even the laws of physics that govern everything in the universe look like lines of computer code that a simulation would follow in executing the program. Furthermore, mathematical equations, numbers and geometric patterns are everywhere: the world seems to be entirely mathematical.
Faced with this observation, Vopson then proposed a hypothesis called mass-energy-information equivalence, extending the already existing information-energy equivalence by proposing that information has mass. The physicist then explains that he has a method based on this new equivalence:
It’s reasonable to assume that a simulated universe contains many bits of information all around us. These bits of information represent the code itself. Thus, detection of these bits of information will confirm the simulation hypothesis.
[…] I postulated that information is actually a fifth form of matter in the universe. I even calculated the expected information content per elementary particle. These studies led to the publication, in 2022, of an experimental protocol to test these predictions.
The experiment consists in erasing the information contained within elementary particles by making them annihilate with their antiparticles (all particles have “anti” versions of themselves, identical but with opposite charge) in a flash of energy, emitting “photons “, i.e. particles of light.
I predicted the exact expected frequency range of the resulting photons based on information physics. The experiment is quite feasible with our current tools and we have launched a crowdfunding site to make it happen.
Indeed, Dr. Vopson has launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform, where he provides more details on the needs necessary to carry out such an experiment. So it concludes as follows :
The nature of our reality is one of the greatest mysteries there is. The more seriously we take the simulation hypothesis, the more likely it is that we will one day prove or disprove it.
