the extra-fun withdrawal without penalty

For its second generation Ranger Raptor, Ford has done everything to review all the technical characteristics of the more “fun” version of its pick-up. Starting with the adoption of a 3.0 Ecoboost V6 petrol which makes this 2022 edition even more captivating.

The 2022 Raptor is built on the basis of the new Ranger, which will be available in 2023. Engine, chassis and suspension have been revised with one goal: more sport!

Ford

In the world of 1t pickups, the Raptor is a special case. With this extensively modified version based on the Ranger, Ford has created a new and much more enjoyable approach to this class of utility vehicle. The first generation, released in 2018, was intended to be a European-style interpretation of the F-150 Raptor, the high-performance version of the best-selling pickup truck in the United States. This model has enjoyed great success, in particular thanks to the work of Ford’s “Performance” division in terms of suspension. Under the bonnet, the four-cylinder diesel with just over 200bhp was not lacking in strengths but rather in character.

Four years later, the 2022 Ranger Raptor uses the same recipe. Based on the new Ranger (to be launched after the Raptor in 2023), Ford Performance engineers have extensively modified the chassis, set-up (with wider track) and suspension (independent up front, multi-link rear). ‘). ). All this is combined with Fox controlled damping and even more advanced electronic transmission management, allowing the vehicle to benefit from very high on- and off-road performance. Under the bonnet, the new 3.0 V6 Ecoboost engine brings the extra soul that was missing from the previous model.

The Ranger Raptor offers exceptional versatility. Its size alone will limit its interest in urban areas.

Price Ford Ranger Raptor 2022

The Raptor is the top of the Ford Ranger range. It is a full-fledged version and has a full equipment, as there are only a few mainly cosmetic options available. This funny animal is on display for €68,400 including tax*. A high price but one that seems justified given the performance of this pick-up with no equivalent on the market. Available only in petrol version with the 292PS 3.0 Ecoboost V6, the Ranger Raptor will be launched with the 205PS 2.0 EcoBlue Diesel engine in 2023.

Guide

The Ranger Raptor is impressive at 5.36m long and 2m wide. The long-travel suspension doesn’t make boarding any easier, but it’s all forgotten once you get behind the wheel. The driver enjoys an excellent driving position with bucket seats offering excellent support. This pickup is made for the great outdoors and puts a smile on your face as soon as you start the engine. The V6 Ford’s vocals are without measure common with those of the old four-cylinder diesel. The Raptor also receives a modular exhaust system that allows you to more or less take advantage of the engine’s blockbuster sound. In Baja mode, reserved for high-speed tracks, the engine is even direct exhaust!

Guaranteed sensations on the track with the Baja mode, while on the road the Raptor offers the best behavior in its category.

Ford

Despite its size and weight (2.4 t in running order), the Raptor is very pleasant on the road. The 292 HP and 491 Nm torque allow for very convincing acceleration and relaunch. The engine is perfectly supported by the excellent ten-speed automatic gearbox, which always guarantees good power. The braking is up to the task and effectively slows down this big toy which can reach 180km/h. In terms of consumption, the 13.8 l/100 km of the WLTP standard are optimistic; rather count on an average of fifteen liters of petrol (even more when crossing).

Controlled damping suspension contain cash flow. They perfectly cancel out road bumps, while speed cuts are overcome in limousine-worthy comfort. The standard 285/70 R17 “All Terrain” tires show good will, even at high speeds, even though they are logically less efficient than purely road tyres.

The Ford Ranger Raptor’s long-travel suspension works wonders when traversing.

Ford

The Raptor also knows how to venture off-road. The choice of transmission (4 x 2, 4 x 4 auto, 4 x 4 permanent high ratios and 4 x 4 permanent short ratios) takes place via the steering wheel located on the center console. When traversing, the long-travel suspension and the ability to lock the front and rear differentials allow you to venture anywhere. The Raptor now has seven riding modes. Three are road-typed (normal, sport, slippery), the other four are dedicated to traversing (rocks, mud and ruts, sand and Baja for the track with ESP disconnect). The Raptor takes advantage of these different driving laws to tailor throttle response and damping control. On the track, in Baja mode, the pickup takes advantage of its power and excellent suspension to deliver extreme sensations. The furrows are crossed without firing a shot, e the Raptor is capable of impressive jumps with surprising comfort. Something to grab quickly for a Dakar rider, especially as the direct exhaust adds to the sensations. Pure pleasure.

The dashboard of the new Ranger Raptor is flattering. The Sync 4 infotainment system is carried over from the Mustang Mach-E.

Ford

The Ranger Raptor benefits from a nice sporty interior finish with a mix of leather and Alcantara. A passenger compartment worthy of a car, far from what other pick-ups in the category offer. The seats and the dashboard are embellished with particularly successful orange-coloured inserts which reinforce their sporty side. As standard, the Raptor receives a Sync 4 multimedia system with a large 12-inch high-performance touchscreen (that of the Mustang Mach-E). Finally, the 10 Bang & Olufsen signature speakers deliver a bewitching sound.

The 100% digital instrumentation allows a large amount of information to be displayed directly in the driver’s field of vision. The latter can thus have data regarding the steering angles, the vehicle attitude and the kinematic chain. The Ranger Raptor also takes care of its occupants thanks to the numerous storage compartments available, smartphone induction charging, dual-zone climate control… Also note the presence, at ceiling level, of a series of six pre-installed switches to control the various accessories, such as additional lighting or a winch.

The handbrake is now electric, which offers new driving aids (including automatic braking uphill, even when crossing). However, it will sadden fans of trail driving, especially in Baja mode. The dumpster is a good size and also incorporates a 220 V power system for connecting portable power tools.

competition

The Raptor version of the Ranger is without competition. Its on-road or off-road performance is superior to that offered by other models. The more utility-oriented Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200, and other Isuzu D-Maxs don’t offer as much even though they have a much higher payload (1t versus the Raptor’s mere 622kg).

To remember

  • Provided you want to “break the bank,” the Ranger Raptor offers a combination of comfort and performance unmatched in this category. As comfortable on the road as off the road, the 2022 version of the Raptor with its 3.0 V6 Ecoboost engine will make its driver smile under all circumstances. However, the payload of 622 kg must be enough for you…
