Domination without an end product does not count in the world of football. Trophies and titles are won only by teams that know how to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves.
So when it comes to judging the quality of a team, there is no more reliable measure than games won.
In today’s list, we’ll take a look at five teams that have stood their ground in 2022, racking up plenty of favorable passing results. Here are the five European teams that have won the most matches in 2022 across all competitions:
#5 Barcelona – 31 games won
Replacing Ronald Koeman, Xavi took charge of FC Barcelona in November 2021. He is helping to turn the tables on his club, propelling them to an admirable second half of the 2021-22 season. Under Xavi’s leadership, FC Barcelona have won 14 of their 20 La Liga matches (2021-22 season) in 2022. They have lost three and drawn three of their other six encounters.
Barça won two Europa League matches before being eliminated by Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals. He also won one Copa del Rey match before being eliminated by Athletic Bilbao in the round of 16.
In the 2022-23 La Liga season, Barça recorded 12 wins in 15 La Liga appearances (two draws, one loss). They achieved two Champions League victories before elimination in the group stage.
#4 Paris Saint-Germain – 32 matches won
Mauricio Pochettino led Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to the 2021-22 Ligue 1 title, but failed miserably in the Champions League and Coupe de France. The French team was eliminated in the round of 16 of both cups.
In the second half of the 2021-22 season (in 2022), Pochettino led PSG to 12 Ligue 1 wins (D4, L3), one Champions League win and just one French Cup win.
Christophe Galtier replaced the Argentina manager ahead of the 2022-23 season and made PSG a force to be reckoned with. Galtier began his reign with a 4-0 Supercoupe de France win over Nantes. Then, in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season, PSG had 14 wins and two draws. Finally, in the Champions League, PSG achieved four wins in the group stage and suffered two draws.
#3 Manchester City – 37 games won
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has led his side to 37 wins in 2022, helping them successfully defend their English Premier League crown in the 2021-22 season. Cityzens picked up all three points in 13 of their 18 Premier League appearances in the 2021-22 season last year.
They also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were beaten by Real Madrid. Along the way, they picked up three victories. Additionally, they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, winning four games before being knocked out by Liverpool. Eventually, they secured a third round win in the EFL Cup before being knocked out by West Ham United in the next round.
Last year, City played 16 games in the 2022-23 Premier League, of which they won 11, lost two and drew three. In the Champions League they won four group stage games and drew the other two. Finally, in the EFL Cup, they had two big wins against Chelsea and Liverpool in the third and fourth round respectively.
#2 Real Madrid – 37 matches won
Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid completed a treble last year by winning the Champions League, La Liga and Supercopa de España. Blancos had 12 wins last year in the 2021-22 La Liga season, compared with three defeats and four draws.
In the 2021-22 Champions League season, he won four and suffered three defeats. In the Supercopa de España they achieved two victories. Finally, in the Copa del Rey, they won two games before being eliminated by Athletic Bilbao in the quarterfinals.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men started the 2022-23 season well, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup. In 2022, the Blancos played 15 games in the 2022-23 La Liga season, picking up 12 wins and dropping points in three games (two losses and one draw). In the Champions League, they have four group stage victories in 2022.
#1 Liverpool – 43 games won
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has 43 wins in all European competitions in 2022. The German manager oversaw 19 Premier League games in 2021-22 in 2022, leading the Reds to 16 wins and three draws. The Merseysiders finished second in the Premier League last season, just one point behind champions Manchester City (93 points).
In the Champions League it reached the final, where it lost 1-0 against Real Madrid. En route to the big event, they won four games, lost once and drew one game. Liverpool won the FA Cup and EFL Cup last season, beating Chelsea in both finals. In the FA Cup they have won six and a further two in the EFL Cup.
Liverpool won the Community Shield 3-2 against Manchester City at the start of the 2022-23 season. Unfortunately, they have not been able to maintain this positive momentum. Last year, the Reds won just eight Premier League games in the 2022-23 season, losing four and drawing four.
In the Champions League they have won five times and lost once. Finally, in the EFL Cup, they secured a third round win over Derby County before being knocked out by Manchester City in the next round.
