Bar symbol in the Champions League, the first scorers | UEFA Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi set a string of goalscoring records during their dominance of European football in the early 21st century, but while they remain the only players to score 100 UEFA Champions League goals, some of their other records look vulnerable .

Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland have the chance to set new records in their fight to become the best striker of the 2020s, while Robert Lewandowski (91 goals in 111 appearances) aims to reach the 100-goal mark in fewer games than Messi or Ronaldo .

  • Aged just 24, Mbappé has scored 40 goals in 59 Champions League appearances. He would need to score ten in his next three games to match Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has reached 50 Champions League goals in 62 appearances, but has a better chance of equaling Messi’s record of 60 goals in his first 80 games.
  • Haaland has scored 28 goals in 23 Champions League appearances so far; the fastest player to 30 goals was Van Nistelrooy, who reached that milestone in 34 games.
  • Lewandowski’s only record so far is that he scored his first 80 Champions League goals in 100 appearances (two fewer than Messi to reach that milestone). With 91 goals in 111 games, his next goal is to become the fastest man to reach 100 goals (it took 123 games for Messi, who holds the record).
  • Benzema’s goals didn’t come fast enough (or young enough) to hold records on those symbolic bars.
